Eixample

The area of eixample has always bewildered me ever since my arrival early July last year. The idea conveyed by Iledefons Cerda is clearly distinguished by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues, and square blocks with chamfered corners are a clear identification of the city and what most people consider to find when it comes to authenticity in Barcelona.

These octagonal blocks, where the streets broaden at every intersection making for greater visibility, better ventilation, an even more interesting aspect is the idea of the chamfered corners!

The buildings, the edge covered facing the street which almost always houses a fruit shop or a local bar, is all too familiar of what makes Barcelona so unique to anything we’ve ever experienced in other cities.

This idea of the corner store or the corner bar since its birth has been a hallmark of Barcelona. It is incredible to present how these corners have been incorporated by modern needs such as short-stay parking space and bcing stations for those who prefer to take the alternate public transport system. The streets help in that they are wide enough to accommodate for these extra facilities.

All in all, an excellent intervention!
