Collserola and Berlin's Schlachtensee
Barcelona is the most densely populated city in the area. And when one enters the train at Placa Catalunya, one of the most hectic and touristic parts of Barcelona one cannot imagine that after only 15 minutes of trainjourney the urban space is left behind entirely.
The Parc de Collserola can't be compared to metropolitan parks like Parc de la Ciutadella or Parc Güell which are artificial. It is a mostly natural area with a wide variety of fauna, flora and geology, although a few interventions like fountains and paths were made. I think this is a very important aspect: Urban areas need natural areas as a balance, not only as a "green lung" but so that people can escape the density and bustle of the city.
The fact that the parc is situated on a hill adds to its importance for barcelona: The south-eastern hillside is visible to Barcelona's population, serving as a green backdrop.
Berlin is surrounded by recreation areas, the most popular ones are the Wannsee and the Schlachtensee, two close-by lakes. People come here to walk their dogs, jog or swim in the summer and although there have been many interventions made, the area is not a park but a mostly natural space with boars and foxes living here.
Barcelona and Berlin even share a similar problem: due to people feeding the wild animals they move more and more into the urban space:
