Modern society and its trash
By definition a city is densely populated. And where there are many people, there is a lot of trash. It's an issue every city has to deal with especially in these times of climate change.
I think Barcelona has a "modern" approach to this topic: the waste treatment plant is not hidden away far away from the city but as close as the smell allows it to be. It is located in a representative building open to visitors and guided tours seem to be routine.
